BOHEMIAN ROOTS 1956: A TRIBUTE TO ALLEN GINSBERG AND THE BEAT GENERATION

"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked..."

So begins the first line of the ground-breaking poem Howl, and fifty years later these words and this poem are just as poignant a cry of outrage against the status quo and an out-of-touch system as they were when first published by Allen Ginsberg in 1956. In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Howl's publication, Ginsberg and other writers of the Beat Generation, and the spirit of the counter culture, the Load of Fun Gallery and PoetryInBaltimore.com are hosting "Bohemian Roots 1956: A Tribute to Allen Ginsberg and the Beat Generation," an evening of Beat poetry performances, live jazz, and a multi-voiced performance of Howl accompanied by live beat box.

The event, to be held at the Load of Fun Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland, on Friday, October 27th, 2006, beginning at 8 pm, will feature three sets of performances by local poets and artists. Selected works by Jack Kerouac, Diane di Prima, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and others will be performed by local poets such as Rosemary Klein, Gregg Mosson, and Karla Mancero, with live jazz accompaniment. Following will be a special Allen Ginsberg Tribute Reading of favorite Ginsberg poems. The evening will culminate in a performance of Ginsberg's Howl arranged by Brian E. Langston for multiple voices and live beat box accompaniment by Shodekeh. An open mic will follow.

Performers include Rosemary Klein, Karen Elliott, Joe Crespo, Alan Barysh, Gregg Mosson, Karla Mancero, Brian E. Langston, and Shodekeh. Live jazz by Tom Reyes and friends.

"Bohemian Roots 1956: A Tribute to Allen Ginsberg and the Beat Generation" begins at 8 pm on Friday, October 27th, 2006, and will continue until midnight. The event is free. Guests are invited to stay for the after-party.

The Load of Fun Gallery is located at 120 W. North Avenue, Baltimore, MD.

This event is being organized by Brian E. Langston, Karla Mancero, Julie Fisher (PoetryInBaltimore.com), and Daniel Stuelpnagel (Load of Fun Gallery).
